In this article, we’ll explore what it means to hold a Royal Honour. Awards Intelligence have worked with many honourees over the years. Read on to discover how our expertise and experience will help you craft a successful nomination.

The Royal family

The Royal family is the emblem of British culture, representing the core values of our society, as well as the highest standards for British businesses and charities.

The honours system exists to maintain these standards and reward those who go above and beyond to transform our society for the better.

Receiving a Royal honour

Individuals who have positively impacted society with the dedication and hard work they have poured into their community, field or cause are recognised by this tradition.

Royal Honours celebrate those who have made significant achievements in their public life, whether this be through charitable or social causes, or in their field of work. It particularly recognises those who have committed themselves to serving Great Britain and enhancing its reputation.

The prestige of Royal honours

A Royal Honour is widely accepted as one of the most prestigious awards in the world.

While honours acknowledge contributions to British society, they can also be awarded globally. Around 20% of our clients are based overseas, with a significant proportion of them not British citizens. The honours system is open to any person worthy of the title, based anywhere in the world.

The following sections outline the ways in which this relatively rare accolade can be used as a valuable platform to elevate your achievements even further.

Enhance your profile

No matter what you’ve been recognised for, a Royal Honour will raise your profile, enhance your reputation, and solidify a sense of trust with potential investors, collaborators and clients.

Attention and recognition

A Royal Honour shines a light on your cause, chosen field or work in the community, increasing your social impact and maximising your potential to change more lives.

The prestige an honour will afford the elevated visibility of its recipients, significantly increasing the number of people who will support you in future endeavours.

Inspiring people

Above all, it is exceptionally inspiring to see people do more for others and to see the impact that this can have.

Royal Honours establish Great Britain as a country of citizens who have a strong moral standing and commit selfless acts that better their communities, rallying to make a difference and to create a better world.

Lesser-known benefits

There are some other lesser-known privileges of being celebrated with a Royal Honour.

For example, honourees can get married at St Faith’s Chapel in St Paul’s Cathedral, a tribute which extends to their children. Commonly known as the OBE Chapel, The Queen and Prince Philip attended the dedication of the Chapel of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire at the east end of the crypt of St Paul’s in 1960.

Future generations of those awarded a Royal Honour can also be baptised at St Paul’s.

The Order’s Chapel may also host memorials for those who hold an honour.

When are the Honours Lists announced?

Honours have been historically kept private and confidential until their official publication date, typically delivered through the New Year’s Honours List or Birthday Honours List announcements.

The Honours ceremony

Recipients enter a list that is published in the London Gazette (the ‘paper of record’), with their full name and a citation, outlining the reason they are receiving the award. They are then invited to an Investiture by the Central Chancery of the Orders of Knighthood, where they are awarded by the King (typically held at Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle or the Palace of Holyroodhouse).
