How many members of the House of Lords are there and how many are independent crossbenchers?
Unlike the House of Commons, which has a defined number of seats, the number of members in the House of Lords is not fixed. As of 10 March 2025, it has 832 sitting members. It is the second largest legislative chamber in the world, behind the National People’s Congress of China. As of 6 March 2025, there are 184 crossbenchers, making up approximately 22 percent of the sitting members in the House of Lords. The Crossbench is typically the third-largest peerage group after the Conservative and Labour benches.
