A Brief History

Women have historically been excluded from this honour, until as recently as 1917. Womens non-combative labour during World War 1 highlighted to King George V that they deserved acknowledgement for their outstanding contributions to the war effort. This was the first time that many women were honoured across all levels of the Order.

Although women had previously been honoured with titles, such as Order of Merit, awarded to both men and women for people who served exceptionally commendable service in the Navy or Army, or great progression in the Arts and Literature sectors, as well as in Science, it had never been employed on this wide of a scale before. Since then, other ranks in the Order, The Order of St. Michael and St. George for example, has allowed the inclusion of women, with Evelyn Bark CMG OBE being the first, appointed as a Companion in 1967.

Today

In short, yes, women can be knighted. Women today are acknowledged with the same level of honour as their male counterparts, the only difference being the language used in the title, with women receiving the title of ‘Dame’ instead of ‘Sir’. This title still holds the same level of honour and integrity, and is presented by the King in the same historical ceremony.  Due to traditional notions of gender, the binary of Knight and Dame exists, however the honour is equal in status and achievement.

This is not to be confused with the Knights Bachelor, which isn’t considered to be a part of the Royal Order and doesn’t have a direct equivalent for women. Knighthoods and Damehoods are equal appointments by His Royal Majesty.
