What are the benefits of getting a Knighthood or Damehood? (KBE & DBE)

Receiving such a high-level award from The King is an exceptional time in an individual’s life. A Knighthood or Damehood is recognised worldwide and is a true legacy for that person’s family, friends and colleagues. These awards represent the pinnacle of the British honours system, recognising individuals who have made significant contributions at a national or international level. Just a few of the benefits reported from Knights and Dames include:

  • Raised awareness of their work, ideas and projects. This is often a highly positive outcome of receiving a knighthood or damehood and it can be the recognition they need to open doors and build upon their achievements even further.
  • New opportunities to support their causes. Receiving an honour can be helpful in expanding the scope of the individuals work and creating even more success for others.
  • Trust, acceptance, respect and a raised profile – which can all be used for positive effect locally, nationally and internationally.

The prestige and recognition that comes with a Knighthood or Damehood extends far beyond the ceremony itself, creating lasting benefits throughout the recipient’s lifetime.

What A Knighthood or Damehood Entitles You To

Recipients of a Knighthood or Damehood receive several formal entitlements that recognise their exceptional contributions:

  • The Title of Sir or Dame – Knights receive the title ‘Sir’ before their forename, whilst Dames receive ‘Dame’. This title is used in all professional contexts and represents one of the most distinguished signs of achievement in the world. Sir David Attenborough, Dame Judi Dench, and Sir Elton John all use these titles, which have become synonymous with their identities.
  • Post-Nominal Letters – Knights receive the post-nominal letters KBE (Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire), whilst Dames receive DBE (Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire). These letters serve as a permanent and globally recognised credential, predominantly used in written professional contexts.
  • Marriage at St Paul’s Cathedral – Holders of Knighthoods and Damehoods are entitled to be married in the Chapel of the Order of the British Empire at St Paul’s Cathedral. This special chapel, designed by Sir Christopher Wren, is reserved exclusively for those who have been awarded MBEs, OBEs, CBEs, Knighthoods or Damehoods. Knights and Dames can also be baptised there, as can their children or grandchildren.
  • Investiture Ceremony – All Knights and Dames are invited to attend an investiture ceremony, typically held at Buckingham Palace, where they receive their insignia from The King or a member of the Royal Family.

These entitlements, combined with the global recognition that accompanies a Knighthood or Damehood, provide lasting personal and professional benefits for recipients.
