KING'S AWARDS FOR ENTERPRISE: SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT CATEGORY

The King's Awards for Enterprise is the most prestigious business awards programme in the world, and as you would expect, securing a coveted King's Award title is not easy. Read on to find out more about what the judges are looking for in each category and see if you've got what it takes to become a winner...

WHAT DOES 'SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT' MEAN FOR THE KING'S AWARDS?
The Sustainable Development category is aimed at organisations who are developing products and services that have a good impact upon, and provide major benefits to the environment, society and the economy.
Sustainability is defined as an activity that “ensures a better quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come”.
As with all King’s Award entries, you must have a minimum of 2 full-time (or part-time equivalent) employees and be based in the UK to enter.
You can be recognised and rewarded for either the products or services you provide, and/or for the way in which you have used your management systems to focus on sustainability. It will be helpful to familiarise yourself with the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals and to consider the tangible impact that your organisation contributes towards them.
You don't need to address each of these areas, but choose the ones that demonstrate how your company's actions or interventions are making a difference. This may be an overall strategy to engage people, or by leading the way in your company or sector doing something groundbreaking that addresses the goals. Perhaps you are developing unique or innovative products/services that are sustainable, or forming effective partnerships with other organisations from your supply chain, or with third parties such as schools, charities or alongside the community.
Winners will be able to demonstrate that with sustainability at the heart of their organisation, they have created a commercially successful model that is growing in turnover and profit year on year, and has a strong business strategy for it’s current and on going success.
You might be able to demonstrate that the effective use of materials, your approach to social development, or your contribution to society has led to your business success, and in turn is demonstrating your commitment to sustainable practices.
There is just one category, and you are required to demonstrate 3 years of financial growth that covers the period your sustainable actions or interventions have taken place.
There are around 18 winners on average announced each year for the Sustainability category of the King’s Awards. This is far fewer than the number of awards given in the Innovation and International Trade categories, but this also reflects the relative number of entries/winners across categories. Recent winners include:
Jaguar Landrover (pictured above) who demonstrated that a reduction in environmental impact can have a highly positive impact on commercial performance.
Incognito who were recognised with a Sustainable Development Award for their environmentally innovative and ethical approach to the development of insect repellents
Berkley Homes who were recognised with an Sustainable Development Award for their environmental and social commitment to sustainable housing.

OUR CLIENTS' THOUGHTS

WHY SHOULD YOU APPOINT AWARDS INTELLIGENCE?
An Awards Intelligence nomination is special. Not only will we save you a great deal of time and hassle, our experts will significantly increase the nominee's chances of success.
Honours Selection Committees judge a candidate's merits based on the nomination put forward. Our nominations are not simply an extended CV, a list of educational achievements, appointments, awards or posts, or a job description. Poor nominations often list these things, and a frequent complaint from the Committees judging the nominations is that the person recommended is "doing no more than their paid job".
Instead, our nominations define what is special about the candidates' achievements and show accurately, memorably and persuasively exactly how and where they have made a difference.
