What’s the worst name you’ve been called?

“There’s only one thing in life worse than being talked about and that’s not being talked about” said Oscar Wilde.

Wise words indeed. And I should know, I’ve been on the receiving end of my fair share of abuse from the national press in my time.

I remember losing one of the most lucrative PR accounts in the UK when I worked for the world’s largest PR consultancy a decade or so ago…long story. The City Diary column of a national newspaper commented in response: “ Mark went from big swinging d*** to well, d*** overnight.” The good news was that this publicity got the phones ringing, and people could see through the hype, so I more than replaced the lost income with new business. After all, everyone wanted the guy who ran one of the biggest PR accounts in the UK to sprinkle some magic dust on them.

Over recent years I’ve focused much more on helping worthy people to get gongs and great companies to win business awards, but I must admit that I miss the cut and thrust of high level PR. I don’t mean Facebook, Twitter, or the millions of .coms and the like. I mean proper top tier PR.

Dealing with hard to reach journalists on the national press, radio and television as well as sceptical trade journalists is challenging and time consuming, but the benefits are immense. This kind of media coverage can create a step-change in awareness. It will raise your profile, enhance your reputation and attract more business. Coverage like this can’t be bought by advertising – that’s why it’s so much more powerful. People still believe what they read in top tier publications!
