“Look beyond London when making honours nominations” says Sir Bob Kerslake.

In addition to the names of olympians, pop stars and celebrities the 2013 Queen’s Birthday Honours List includes many individuals who are not in the public eye. Thanks to the public process for honours nominations, their hard work should not go unnoticed.

The Managing Director of Newlands Engineering, Lynn Kerfoot, was awarded an MBE in 2013 for services to Business in Tameside. Newlands is a leading manufacturer of telescopic boom conveyors that enable goods to be loaded and unloaded rapidly and efficiently. Having joined Newlands in 1975 as their first full time secretary, Lynn has dedicated her entire career to the company.

Lynn has been at the forefront of the firm’s resilience through some testing times. Newslands has bucked both the decline of British manufacturing and survived the various economic crises of the last thirty years. On-going relationships with Royal Mail and Parcel Force combined with strong leadership and their extensive export experience and contacts proved instrumental in enabling the manufacturer to overcome the many challenges they have faced.

Lynn’s exceptional contribution goes beyond her day job. She was also President of Tameside Local Chamber Council and a founder of Tameside Business Family, an organisation that provides assistance to entrepreneurs who do not have family they can go to for business advice. Lynn’s combination of service to business and the community is a perfect example of what the Honours Committee looks for in an honours nominee.

Lynn’s honour also comes at a time when the Cabinet Office is actively encouraging more nominations from outside the south east. This is part of their wider bid to improve the gender, regional and racial diversity of honours nominees. In addition to encouraging nominations from outside the capital and its environs, they are also encouraging organisations based in London and the south east to nominate volunteers and staff from the rest of the country.
