Considered the most prestigious business award in the UK, if not the world, the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise have just announced 220 winners in this year’s competition across 4 keenly contested categories: InnovationInternational TradeSustainability and Promoting Opportunity through Social MobilityAwards Intelligence is proud to announce a staggering 87% success rate for our clients in 2020. Congratulations to all our happy winners and we hope you come back for a 2021 win!

Although the number of winners this year rose from 201 to 220 – a 9.5% jump – there were just 4 companies that scooped an impressive double-category win, compared to 8 double winners in 2018, and 6 in 2019. These results indicate that this flagship business competition is tougher than ever.

The International Trade category, which always produces the most winners, remained broadly flat this year with 128 winners compared to 129 last year. The Innovation category had a slight increase with 66 winners versus 61 in the 2019 round. Promoting Opportunity remains a tough category with just 7 winners – only two more than last year. By far the biggest leap was the Sustainability category, with over three times as many winners this year: 19 worthy recipients compared to only 6 last year. This suggests that companies are finally taking their sustainability credentials more seriously.

What type of business can enter?

As usual the business size and sector is taken into account when the judging takes place. Although there were inevitably some large FTSE companies among the winners, there were also small, innovative private companies. Certainly more encouragement is being given to small and medium sized businesses than ever before, and companies with as few as two employees were awarded this year. As long as you are a UK business or not-for-profit organisation with at least two staff, you are eligible to enter.

Why should you bother entering?

The benefits of winning this competition are incredible, with previous winners reporting that winning has enabled them to grow their business, expand in to new markets, attract new customers, secure investment and open many doors to new opportunities.

Still not convinced?

Winners are invited to a Royal reception and Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenants present the coveted awards to businesses locally throughout the year. Winners receive a Grant of Appointment (an official certificate) and a commemorative crystal trophy, plus they can proudly fly the Queen’s Awards flag at head office. The distinguished emblem (shown above) can be used on all marketing collateral, and the award is valid for a period of 5 years. There really is no greater business accolade, and the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are still regarded as the pinnacle of the business awards calendar.

So what next?

The 2021 Queen’s Awards open for entry on 1st May, and close for entry at noon on 9th September. It’s a long, time-consuming process so you should plan ahead and start the ball rolling as soon as possible if you are seriously interested in winning.
